A stub end is always used with a lap joint flange, as a backing flange. Stub ends are manufactured in all standard wall thicknesses, and available in sizes ranging from 1/2″ to 48″. The dimensions for stub ends and related dimensional tolerances are defined in the ASME B16.9 standard. Light-weight corrosion resistant Stub Ends (fittings) are defined in MSS SP43. Stub ends are generally available in two lengths, MSS (Standard Length) and ANSI (Long Length).

Metline is a specialist manufacturer of stainless steel stub ends as per ASTM, ASME and DIN standards for customers and buyers worldwide. Metline offers stainless steel stub ends in basically three types explained as below:

  • Type A – Type “A” Stub Ends are for use with standard Lap Joint Flanges.  The Lap thickness on the Stub End is greater than, or equal to, the nominal thickness of the pipe wall.  Also, type “A” has its outside corner radius to receive Lap Joint Flanges. The inside corner is square.  The Lap generally has a machined serrated face.
  • Type B – Type “B” Stub Ends are for use with standard Slip-On Flanges acting as Lap Joint Flanges. The Lap thickness on these Stub Ends is greater than, or equal to, the nominal thickness of the pipe wall.  Also, Type “B” has an outside corner radius small enough to receive Slip-On Flanges that are being used as the Backup Flange. The inside corner is square.  The Lap generally has a machined serrated face.
  • Type C – Type “C” Stub Ends are for use with standard Lap Joint Flanges and Slip on Flanges.  The Lap of a Type “C” is flared leaving a rounded edge at the I.D. of the Lap. If required this radius can be made nearly square.  The Lap thickness is 75% of the pipe wall.  The Type “C” has a very short outside radius small enough to receive any back up flange.  The Lap face on a Type “C” is not machined and is smooth.
