This standard covers the requirements for 22 grades of titanium and titanium alloy tube intended for surface condensers, evaporators, and heat exchangers.

Tube Finishes

Titanium tubing are furnished in the annealed state except for Grades 9, 18 and 28, that, at the option of the purchaser, may be supplied either in the annealed or the cold worked and stress relieved condition, defined as at a minimum temp of 600°F (316°C) for not less than 30 minutes.


As per the standard the tubes go through several destructive and non-destructive sets of tests.

Titanium Tube Destructive Testing

  • Flattening – Tubing will withstand, without cracking, flattening under a weight applied gradually at room temperature
  • Flaring – For tube 31/2 in. (88 mm) in outside diameter and smaller, and 0.134 in. (3.4 mm) in wall thickness and thinner, a section of tube roughly 4 in. (102 millimeters) in length will endure being flared with a tool having a 60° included angle before the tube at the mouth of the flare has been widened.

Non Destructive Testing

Welded tubing shall be tested using both a non-destructive electromagnetic test and an ultrasonic examination. Seamless and welded/cold worked tubes shall be examined utilizing an ultrasonic test. Welded or seamless piping will be examined using a hydrostatic or pneumatic check.


The following standard includes the requirements for 28 grades of titanium and titanium alloy seamless pipe designed for general corrosion resisting and enhanced temp service.

Tube Finishes

Except if specified, cold worked tubing will be heat treated at the temperature of not less than 1000°F (538°C). Hot worked tube finishing above 1400°F (760°C) doesn’t have to be additionally heat treated. The minimal heat treat conditions for Grade 9, 18, and 28 tubing supplied in the stress relieved condition will be 600°F (316°C) for not less than 30 minutes.

  • Grade 5, Grade 23, Gr 24, Gr 25, Gr 29, Gr 35, or Gr 36 may be supplied in an annealed or aged condition
  • Grade 9, Grade 18, or Grade 28 may be provided in a cold-worked and stress-relieved or annealed
  • Grade 9, Gr 18, Gr 23, Gr 28, or Gr 29 may be supplied in a transformed-beta state Grade 19, Grade 20, or Gr 21-solution-treated or solution may be provided in a treated and aged.

Titanium Pipe Testing

In accordance with the standard the tubing go through a series of destructive and non-destructive group of tests.

Titanium Tubing Destructive Testing

Pipe Two in. (51 mm) and below in nominal diameter, shall be capable of being bent cold through 90° around a cylindrical mandrel that is 12 times the nominal diameter of the tube, while not developing cracks.Gr Five, Grade 23, Grade 24, Gr 25, Grade 29, Gr 35, and Gr 36 are exempt from this requirement.

  • Bending Test – Pipe 2 in. (51 mm) and below in nominal diameter, shall be able to be bent cold through 90° all round a round mandrel that is twelve times the nominal diameter of the tube, without developing cracks.
  • Flattening – Seamless pipe shall be capable of tolerating, without cracking, flattening under a load applied progressively at room temperature.

Titanium Tubing Non Destructive Testing

Each length of tubing will endure, while not showing bulges, leaks, or any other problems, an internal hydrostatic pressure that will produce in the tubing wall a stress of 50 Percent of the minimum specified yield strength at room temperature.


This standard handles the requirements for 27 grades of titanium and titanium alloy welded pipe intended for general corrosion resisting and raised temp service.

Titanium Tube Finishes

Pipe will be furnished as follows unless otherwise specified:

  • Grades 1, 2, 7, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 33 will be supplied as welded or annealed.
  • Grades 3, 12, 15, and 34 will be furnished as annealed.
  • Grade 5, Grade 23, Grade 24, Grade 25, or Grade 35 shall be supplied as annealed, or aged.
  • Grade 9 or Grade 18 will be furnished as annealed.
  • Grade 19, Grade 20, or Grade 21 shall be furnished as solution handled, or solution treated and aged

Titanium Pipe Thickness

Thickness of the wall will be assessed by acceptable means. The difference in thickness at any position shall not be greater than +-12.5% of the nominal wall thickness specified, unless otherwise arranged between buyer and manufacturer at the time of an order.

Titanium Pipe Testing

Assessment of tubing weld quality shall be performed by either the flattening test or the guided bend examination. Examination specimens will be picked at random from each lot of tube manufactured.
